that head butt

July 25, 2006

Judging by the punishment meeted out it appears that calling someone names is two thirds as bad as a violent reaction (actually, they could have banned Mr Zidane for 100 games since he’s already hung up his boots anyway). just as well that the italian did not refer to race or Italy would have been stripped of the World Cup, Mr Materazzi would have been arrested and Zidane acclaimed as a national hero. When I was a lad we were told to retaliate to an insult by saying ‘sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me’. Anyone who was upset by being called names was told not to be a cry-baby. My view is that footballers should be trained in the art of ‘sledging’ as it is called in cricket and encouraged to make a witty response. Wilkipedia quotes the example of Javed Miandad who called Merv Hughes a ‘fat bus conductor’ (now there’s an insult worthy of at least a head butt). Merv dismissed Miandad shortly afterwards, and called out “Tickets Please”. If players were encouraged to develop the art of sledging it might make for more entertainment than most football matches. And when one finishes as a draw it could be settled by a sledging competition rather than penalties. The trouble is England would still lose anyway.
