Toilet diplomacy

July 26, 2006

The Guardian reports that at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers meeting the Chinese and Japanese foreign ministers ran into each other in the lavatory. “I had meaningful discussions with Minister Li at the toilet,” a Japanese official quoted his foreign minister, Taro Aso, as telling the meeting of Asian ministers, referring to his Chinese counterpart, Li Zhaoxing. When asked what had been discussed, the ministers apparently “buttoned up.” Someone had, however, forgotten to switch a mic off and we are able to report the conversation in full.
