Fish and chips the top icon

August 4, 2006

FISH and chips is the best-loved symbol of England, it was revealed yesterday.he traditional supper joins the pint, rugby, the bowler hat and the bobby as “icons” of the nation. And foxhunting was deemed quintessentially English as were the protests which led to its eventual ban.
I can suggest a few more things that are quintessentially English: sitting on the fence, rambling, the London Underground with its filthy platforms and sporadic trains, railway coffee, saying sorry when someone bumps into you, miserable weather, miserable people complaining about the miserable weather,  football displays on a par with the Faroes islands B team, hoodies, Norman Tebbit, mass produced chicken vindaloo, public outcries when politicians are caught behaving like everybody else, sanctimonious politicians.
