not my cup of tea

August 27, 2006

Britain is the capital of Europe when it comes to marital separation. It is also top of the tea-drinking league table. It is obvious, to me therefore, that drinking tea causes divorce. Lipton’s have a lot to answer for. The UK is also ranked as the EU’s biggest importer of illegal tropical timber, but that’s another story.
Back to divorce. A learned judge commented on the subject recently: “People who divorce often simply don’t know what they are letting themselves in for”. What seems more important to me is that people getting married don’t know what they are letting themselves in for. Personally, I don’t think we should bother with marriage. I think there should simply be a certificate of fitness to bring up children. After all, you have to pass a test before you can drive a car but any fool can spawn a child without having the remotest idea at all how to deal with it.
