Clergyman found guilty of being a conman

September 9, 2006

For years, the Rev. Toby Scraggs had been persuading gullible elderly parishioners that there was a ‘heaven’ and that by believing they would escape ‘eternal damnation’. ‘In sermon after sermon’, said Ms  Nicola Slammer, prosecuting, ‘Scraggs had led his parishioners to believe that they would enjoy an afterlife of eternal bliss.’ When police searched Scraggs’s home they found a document on his home computer containing the advice: “A good parson takes a bit of truth and a lot of lies and binds them together to pull the wool over the eyes of the ignorant.”

Scraggs was sentenced to 240 years detention in a Trappist monastery.
