Christian anger at senior Muslim cleric’s speech
September 15, 2006
Speaking in Mecca, the Immam of Bageshot quoted a 14th century Caliph of Baghdad as saying Christians were a ‘bunch of badly behaved yobs who didn’t know their lumbar vertebrae from their humerus’. The Immam went on to say that behaving like total lunatics was not what the Supreme Being had in mind and that He condemned violence, especially perpretrated by infidels. ‘All this stuff about loving your neighbour’ he went on ‘was for the kiddies and Jesus as much as admitted later that it was a load of codswallop’. True beleievers, he said, don’t go around hitting people on the head who don’t agree with them if there is even the slightest opportunity of blowing them up.
Several Western parliaments passed a resolution criticising the Immam for making “derogatory” comments. The Archbishop of Chipping Norton said the Immam’s remarks “aroused the anger of the whole Christian world”. The Immam said his intention had been to cultivate a position of respect and dialogue towards other religions and quoting the 14th century Caliph didn’t necessarily mean that he disagreed with him. The remarks prompted fears of unrest in predominantly Christian Wigan.
